Penn & Teller: Fool Us is a magic competition television show where magicians perform tricks before American comedian-magician duo Penn & Teller. The first 2 seasons featured host Jonathan Ross, and the fourth season Alyson Hannigan. Fool Us was filmed at Fountain Studios in London, England (season one) as well as the Penn & Teller Theater at Las Vegas (season two onward). Each episode starts off by introducing the purpose of the series. Penn & Teller come out and are seated at the center stage. They watch eager magicians will perform their magic before them, in front of an audience of live viewers. Following each performance, Penn & Teller privately discuss the show while the host questions the magicians. Penn & Teller then reveal if they know the method used to perform the trickin a cryptic manner, usually by using words or by writing down the method and then present it to the magicians to confirm, so as to avoid public disclosure of the secrets behind the trick.
Teller says that the doublespeak is a way to teach people new techniques without ruining the trick. Should Penn & Teller are wrongor are not able to find out how they did itthe magician will be awarded a Fool Us trophy and the possibility of performing in one of Penn and Teller’s Las Vegas shows. A backstage judge, who is well-versed in the art of magician’s trade and is intimately informed how the trick is performed prior to the show, makes any necessary calls whether Penn & Teller were properly fooled. At the end of each show, Penn & Teller perform a magic act on their own.
For the first season, Jonathan Ross served as a temporary replacement for Penn and Teller’s hosting duties but they were back for the following season. It was filmed on Fountain Studios in London, England during its initial seasonbefore relocating to the Penn & Teller Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada for the second season, and later seasons.
